About Bayou Timbers

Another note from the BCHM Curator:
"Some of the pine groves in the area were planted by Ben D. Cannan, I don’t know about the grove in your specific area. Camp Mohawk is said to have to the only stand of native pine trees in the County."
Camp Mohawk is across Chocolate Bayou and upstream about 1/2 mile from Bayou Timbers,

Our Corner of the World

Bayou Timbers, served by the Alvin post office and Alvin ISD, is located in the Liverpool, Texas ETJ (extra-territorial jurisdiction). Liverpool, an incorporated community in Brazoria County eight miles from Alvin, began as a trading post around 1827. It was settled in 1834 and had a local schoolteacher by 1836. The town was officially founded in 1837 as a Chocolate Bayou shipping point for wool, hides, and produce from the Stephen F. Austin colony.

We have learned from long-time residents of the area that in the early 1900's our location was a pine plantation where the trees were grown, harvested and processed at a sawmill just off Hwy 35 and FM 2917. This area was also famous for its oak trees, and many early residents of Alvin came down to this area, dug up a tree and took it home. This is the origin of many of the beautiful oaks of Alvin.

Historical Research Received!

We have recently contacted the Brazoria County Historical Museum for possible information about the early development of our area. We have prepared a report on the findings, which show that two of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" did indeed own and operate sawmills from about 1832 near here on Chocolate Bayou. We will continue to share information we receive, and hope you enjoy this learning adventure. We welcome any information you might like to share.

Homesites

Enjoying access to Chocolate Bayou from our community park, the homesites in our wooded neighborhood vary from about 1.2 to 1.4 acres. Within the last year we've had an increase in construction of new homes with 2 new families moving in and 3 more homes underway. Of course we've met and welcomed all the new neighbors and they are certainly going to fit right in! There are still a few homesites left, so if you like beautiful trees and great neighbors, come take a look... and be sure to wave!

UPDATE October 2020: Wow! since the above was written, we have really grown! Only 4 lots are not developed, but some of the owners have plans for the future. Some original families have moved on and new families have moved in but our beautiful neighborhood maintains its welcoming character.

UPDATE October 2022: It’s been a couple of years of changes for Bayou Timbers. We weathered Covid, a deep freeze in February 2021, and 2022 brought months of heavy drought, and an onslaught of pine bark beetles. We lost many of our large pines. But Texans (native and newcomers) are resilient, and we will recover! Check out the 2022 map of the neighborhood on Google Maps at this link:
